Two people lost their lives and four others were injured on Tuesday when a truck collided with vehicles at the Polymilou toll station along the Egnatia Odos motorway in north-western Greece.

According to reports, the truck crashed into two cars waiting in line at the Polymilou toll station. The vehicle, which was reportedly moving at high speed, crashed through safety railings and into the toll booth itself, sparking a fire.

Witnesses said there was thick fog in the area at the time of the collision.

Two people inside the cars were killed instantly. Several others in nearby vehicles sustained injuries, along with a toll booth employee who was on duty at the time.

Emergency services, including fire trucks and ambulances, rushed to the scene.

The injured were transported to hospitals in Veria and Kozani.

Traffic along the Egnatia Odos motorway heading toward Kozani has been diverted through the Veria interchange as police continue to investigate the scene and assess the damage.

The traffic diversion has led to significant congestion toward Western Macedonia, as large numbers of Greeks have already departed Athens for their villages ahead of this weekend’s Easter holiday.
