Under the supervision of chief engineer Joseph B. Strauss, the Golden Gate Bridge began construction January 5, 1933. It spans 1,280 meters long across the Golden Gate in California to link San Francisco with Marin county up north.
Upon its completion in 1937, it was the longest and tallest suspension bridge in the world. Even though others have surpassed it in size since then, it is still considered the most photographed bridge in the world.
Construction was rife with challenges, including fast running tides, storms, fogs and accidents which resulted in a total of 11 worker deaths during the 4 year build.
The bridge opened to vehicular traffic on May 28, 1937, under budget and ahead of schedule.
