On this day in 2002, Iraq, Iran, and North Korea are dubbed the “axis of evil”

Upon delivering a State of the Union address, US President George W. Bush described IraqIran, and North Korea as  “an axis of evil, arming to threaten the peace of the world,” because of the states’ attempts to develop Weapons of Mass Destruction.

Other notable events on January 29th:

  • In 1996, French President Jaques Chirac announced the “definite end” to his country’s nuclear testing program, due to international protest as a result of their recent detonation of a device six times the force of Hiroshima’s in the South Pacific.

  • In 1886, German engineer Carl Benz patents his “Benz Patent-Motorwagen Nummer 1”, the first gasoline-driven car.

  • In 1845, Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” is published, appearing in the New York Evening Mirror.
