On this day in 1992, the Maastricht Treaty is signed, officially establishing the European Union

The Maastricht Treaty was based on three pillars which brought further integration in the European Community in matters of foreign and security policy, justice and police issues. It also established a common monetary system, the Euro, which replaced the currencies of 12 out of 15 member states at the time (Greece failed to qualify in 1992 and as a result adopted the euro for public use in 2002).
