President Ferdinand E. Marcos‘s regime was filled with corruption, economic stagnation, political repression. After public outcry over his rival Benigno Aquino‘s assassination and his fraudulent electoral victory over the latter’s widow, Corazon Aquino, he was forced to flee his country for Hawaii where he died in exile a few years later. Aquino replaced him as president, becoming the first female to hold such a position in Asia.
