Several primary and secondary schools in Greece on Friday received threatening emails, with cyber experts later tracing the senders to seven IP addresses in Russia.

Greek authorities immediately activated a geoIP block for mail servers of schools in the nationwide network.

Schools that received the malicious emails are located in the greater Athens area, eastern Macedonia, Epirus and south-central mainland Greece.

The emails were written in English and warned of the existence of an explosive device in the schools. Similar threats were sent last Monday to school units in Slovenia.

More security protocols were applied after the incident, while Greek Police’s cybercrime unit was assigned the investigation of the incident.
