The unveiling of the Thessaloniki Metro logo took place on Wednesday morning, marking a milestone in the city’s long awaited metro project, in the presence of the leadership of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.

The logo features the lowercase letter of the Greek “μ” inside a circle that resembles the tunnels of the metro system.

The word “metro” is also written, in the circle, to ensure that foreign tourists to the city will easily recognize its identity.

The use of the Greek letter “μ,” drawn from the Byzantine era, is intended to reflect the rich historical past of of Thessaloniki while connecting it to the present day through a modern mass transit system like the Thessaloniki metro.

During the presentation the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Christos Staikouras stated that the metro which will be set in operation in 17 days is expected to change the transportation landscape of Thessaloniki.

“This is a project that will change the daily life of the city. As the political leadership of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, we are working to deliver a high-quality and technically sound project,” said Staikouras.

Regarding the logo, he mentioned that the goal was to create an identity that would give a modern project the historic essence of Thessaloniki, blending tradition with modern aesthetics and functionality.

Meanwhile, Staikouras also officially announced today the reduction of the OASTH (Thessaloniki Urban Transport Organization) ticket fare to 60 cents, down from 90 cents, during the signing ceremony for the lease of 159 buses in Thessaloniki.
