Yet another mishap was reported at the Thessaloniki Metro on Friday 21, adding one more incident to the series of malfunctions since its inauguration last November. The Metro’s Line 1 was out of service for approximately an hour due to a technical issue affecting both tracks.
According to the operating company, all passengers on board at the time were safely disembarked without any complications. The issue has since been resolved, as confirmed by the metro’s official website.
Meanwhile, a pilot policing program has been launched in parts of Western Attica, introducing law enforcement presence inside buses and suburban railway trains, as reported by Greek public TV ERT.
This security initiative will adapt to prevailing conditions, deploying two uniformed police officers and one plainclothes officer per vehicle.
Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Vasilis Oikonomou emphasized the necessity of this measure, citing extreme incidents, including drug use that have been reported in public transport.
He described the program as “dynamic,” stating that it will be implemented in problem areas as needed, with future expansion planned for southern Athens.
The head of the Transport Police detailed the operational plan, highlighting daily interventions aimed at enhancing safety for both passengers and transit staff.
