The opening of five new Thessaloniki metro stations in the direction of Kalamaria, southeast of the downtown area, has been pushed back, with the launch now scheduled for February 2026.
“By February 2026, five additional stations of the Thessaloniki metro will be operational,” said Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Dimas earlier this week.
Originally, the project was slated for completion this fall.
In addition, all routes on the central Thessaloniki metro line will be suspended for 30 to 40 days to allow for the completion of remaining works, said Deputy Infrastructure and Transport Minister Nikos Tachiaos.
The long-anticipated Thessaloniki Metro, which serves approximately 250,000 passengers a day, was officially inaugurated on November 30, 2024.
The inauguration marked a major milestone for the northern port city and was attended by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and then-President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou.
The metro’s central line spans 9.6km and includes 13 stations, with end-to-end travel time totaling just 17 minutes.
Beyond the Kalamaria extension, set to serve one of Thessaloniki’s most densely populated suburbs, plans also include the expansion of the network to the city’s western and northern districts, further improving urban connectivity.
