Two experts have concluded in a report that the controversial three videos, released last week by an Athens lawyer, purporting to show the train freight headed to Tempi inside tunnels causing a firestorm in the public arena, are indeed authentic.
The report, drawn up by experts Apostolos Vasilakos and Stavros Batzopoulos, confirms that the freight train involved in the 2023 train collision, which resulted in the death of 57 people, is the one depicted in the three newly released videos.
Their investigation aimed to determine whether the train shown in the digital footage matches the fatal freight train 63503, which was involved in the railway accident on February 28.
The two experts analyzed all the elements visible in the videos, such as the wagon numbers, container markings, and any other notable details that could confirm the train’s identity. Additionally, they examined the footage for signs of tanks or pallets carrying highly flammable liquid, hydrocarbons, or solvents, focusing on the wagons behind the electric locomotives and those carrying steel sheets or containers, extending to the entire length of the train.
The experts concluded that the train seen in the videos was indeed involved in the Tempi disaster. The footage also shows that the train was loaded only with the cargo listed on the official list, with no other freight visible on the wagons. However, the report clarifies that it verifies only the train identification with freight train 63503 and does not certify the authenticity of the video recordings.
The report is confined to the veracity of the specific three videos recovered from the CCTV footage managed by a firm contracted by the Hellenic Railway Company (OSE) and does not delve into any other details regarding the case.
