The issue of underage drinking is taking on alarming proportions in Greece, with hundreds of minors, most aged between 14 and 16, being admitted to hospitals annually due to excessive alcohol consumption. Adding to the concern is the sale of adulterated alcoholic beverages, which are being served to minors in violation of regulations.

Approximately 200 cases of alcohol poisoning among minors are recorded annually in pediatric hospitals in Athens.

Experts warn that adolescents are particularly vulnerable to alcohol’s toxic effects. “Their bodies are not developed enough to handle the toxic effects of alcohol. The developing brain is particularly affected, leading to behavioral changes and significant toxicological impacts,” said Nikos Thomaidis, Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

The Greek government is preparing to introduce stricter measures, including criminalizing the sale of alcohol to individuals under 18 without exceptions, acknowledging past regulatory loopholes.

Tougher Anti-Smoking Measures

Alongside measures addressing underage drinking, the government is revising smoking laws to protect minors and the public. Key changes include:

  • Ban on Tobacco Sales to Minors: Stricter penalties for those selling tobacco products to underage individuals, including fines and legal consequences for parents allowing such behavior.
  • Prohibition in Outdoor Spaces: Smoking and vaping may soon be banned in outdoor spaces frequented by children, including playgrounds, outdoor cafes, pools, beaches, and restaurant terraces. Regulations will apply if individuals are within 10 meters of one another.
