A tanker carrying crude oil collided with a cargo ship in the maritime area of the Kafireas Strait, south of the coastal town of Karystos, on the Greek island of Evia, under still-unclear circumstances.

The tanker, with a crew of 26, was transporting 131,941 metric tons of crude oil and had departed from the port of Novorossiysk, Russia, and was bound for the port of Castellón, in Spain.

The cargo ship, manned with 22 crew members, was sailing without a cargo, having departed from a port in Italy and heading to the port of Constanța, in Romania.

As authorities confirm, the crew members of the tanker and cargo ship are in good health, with no injuries reported.

The collision resulted in minor material damages above the waterline, with no water ingress or marine pollution reported.

Due to weather conditions and unsafe docking at the port of Karystos, both vessels are independently sailing to the anchorage of Piraeus, where they are expected to be temporarily prohibited from departure.

There, the vessels will undergo thorough inspections and obtain seaworthiness certificates from classification societies before resuming their journeys.
