Greek police have arrested a 45-year-old foreign national on charges of rape and sexual assault against a 6-year-old girl in Athens.
The suspect is reportedly from Syria and is facing charges of rape against a minor, a felony under Greek law.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, when, according to police sources, the man reportedly noticed the little girl walking by herself in the hallway of the apartment building they were living in.
According to reports, the suspect and the young girl are neighbors, residing in adjacent apartments within the same building. In the days leading up to the incident, the 45-year-old man saw the minor moving around in the area, and under circumstances that remain unclear, he led her into his apartment and assaulted her.
Afterward, the minor was taken to the hospital, where doctors reportedly ascertained she had been sexually assaulted and notified the authorities.
After police formed a case file against the Syrian suspect, he was brought before the competent prosecutor.
