Greek supermarket prices for a typical household grocery basket – Basic food basket – remain lower compared to similar stores in France, England, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, and Romania, according to a study by the Research Institute of Retail Consumer Goods (IELKA).
The findings are based on IELKA’s regular report, which includes a price comparison study using data from price comparison platforms in each country and direct price checks from supermarket chains.
The study compared prices for 43 product categories and subcategories in March 2024 for Greece with other countries and included:
– 20 subcategories forming a typical shopping basket, as defined in the ongoing study since 2012.
– 18 subcategories in the household basket since November 2022.
– 5 subcategories were added to the household basket in March 2023.
The average product costs were estimated from reliable price comparison websites in Greece and abroad, as well as from supermarket chains. The data includes both promotional prices and private-label products in each country. It is noted that the prices pertain solely to supermarket chains and exclude other retail points.
