Mass transit in Greece is expected to be affected by a 24-hour strike declared for Wednesday, May 1 – which is Holy Wednesday on the Orthodox Christian religious calendar – called by the General Confederation of Employees of Greece (GSEE), the main private sector umbrella trade group in the country.
Specifically, work stoppages will affect buses and trolleys in the greater Athens-Piraeus area, but only partially, as the routes will run normally between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on that day.
The following strikes have been scheduled for May 1, 2024 (midnight to 11:59 p.m.):
– National Railway – 24-hour strike
– Attica/Peloponnese Suburban Railway – 24-hour strike
– Port employees and ferry services – 24-hour strike
– Athens Green Line Train (Line 1) – 24-hour strike
– Athens Metro (Lines 2 and 3) – 24-hour strike
– Trams in Athens – 24-hour strike
– Buses in Athens will be operating between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.
– Buses in Thessaloniki will be operating from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Other organizations may decide to join the 24-hour general strike on May 1 without prior warning.
Travelers and commuters are advised to make arrangements. May Day demonstrations are scheduled to take place at Syntagma Square at 10:30 a.m. and at Klafthmonos Square at 11 a.m. In Thessaloniki, demonstrations are scheduled at the Venizelos Statue, Arch of Galerius, and Labor Center at 10:30 a.m.
