A powerful winter cold front, Storm Coral, is set to sweep across much of the Eastern Mediterranean, bringing an unseasonably cold front and even moderate snowfall to regions unaccustomed to such extreme winter weather. The storm started to impact Greece as of Wednesday evening with cold and icy weather, and is expected to last into early next week, bringing Arctic air masses that will result in various amounts of snow, freezing temperatures, and generally severe weather conditions across Greece, Israel and Cyprus.
As part of the 2024–25 European windstorm season, Storm Coral is the first major weather system to impact the Eastern Mediterranean in 2025. With plummeting temperatures, rare snowfalls, and widespread disruptions, it serves as a reminder of how volatile winter weather can be—even in typically mild regions.
A Winter Wonderland in Greece
For a country more associated with sandy beaches and sun-soaked landscapes, Greece is preparing for an exceptionally wintry few days. The weather is so severe that even British media are warning their citizens travelling to Greece to be prepared.
Snowfall is expected in northern Athens and in the surrounding mountains, a rare occurrence for the capital, while ski resorts in the country’s mountainous regions are anticipating one of their longest seasons in years. Several islands and high-altitude areas are also bracing for snow, offering a stark contrast to the usual mild Mediterranean winter.
Israel Braces for a Snow-Covered Jerusalem
Meanwhile, in Israel, Jerusalem and the Hebron hills are among the regions forecasted to see significant snowfall starting Sunday, with elevations above 500–700 meters (1,640–2,297 feet) most likely to experience accumulations. This marks one of the most impactful winter storms to hit the country in recent years, bringing with it the potential for travel disruptions and school closures.
Cyprus Faces a Double Challenge
The Mediterranean island of Cyprus is not only expecting snow in its mountainous and semi-mountainous regions but is also grappling with power shortages as temperatures plummet. Authorities have warned that Storm Coral could lead to rolling blackouts, adding to the challenges posed by the severe weather conditions.
That being said, the country is not missing the opportunity to advertise its winter tourism offer.

Snow in Istanbul? A Rare but Stunning Sight
Even Turkey is feeling the effects of Storm Coral, with Istanbul covered in snow as early as Wednesday. While snowfall in Turkey’s largest city is not unheard of, it remains a relatively rare occurrence, often requiring the perfect mix of Arctic air and moisture from the surrounding seas.
