National carrier Aegean will be transporting the Holy Light from Jerusalem to Greece on a special flight on the evening of Holy Saturday (May 4), the airline announced this week.
A sacred symbol of Greek Orthodox Easter, the Holy Light is believed to be divinely lit on the morning of Holy Saturday in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the old town of Jerusalem amid thousands of Orthodox Christians and then transported to Greece on board special flights, where it is greeted with reverence and distributed to churches across the country for the midnight “Anastasi” (Resurrection) service.
According to the itineraries, the Holy Light will first arrive at Athens International Airport and from there on special flights by Aegean, Olympic Air, and Sky Express transported to Thessaloniki, Ioannina, Corfu, Alexandroupolis, Hania (Crete), Samos, Limnos, Larissa, Kefalonia, Heraklio (Crete), Rhodes, Mykonos, Lesvos, Santorini, Chios and Kythera.
Meanwhile, Greeks are departing cities in droves for the five-day Easter holiday which this year includes the transferred May Day holiday.
