Six people, including a security van driver, were arrested on Wednesday in connection with a massive heist last September in the Lavrion township of extreme southeast Attica prefecture.
Three masked gunmen made off with nearly 1.2 million euros – one of the biggest robberies in recent memory in Greece.
All six of the suspects, identified as local men, were arrested in a coordinated action a day earlier, police announced on Thursday.
The Sept. 26, 2024 incident witnessed three masked suspects in a stolen vehicle first blocking the van in the port town of Lavrion, southeast of the greater Athens area, and then slashing its tires. They then lit a smoke flare, threw paint on the vehicle’s windshields and threatened a security guard inside the vehicle with a mockup of a bomb in order to force him out of the van. The latter was described as reinforced but not an armored truck in the conventional sense.
With an assault rifle pointed at him the security guard then opened a safe containing the cash.
Media reports on Thursday have authorities confiscating roughly of 200,000 euros believed to be part of the stolen loot.
The robbery took place outside a toy retailer that was the last stop on the security detail’s schedule that day for cash pickups.
Another media report has authorities making a connection between the driver and the other suspects through cell phone communications.
