Archaeological sites, monuments and museums throughout Greece will once again be open in the evening for this year’s August full moon, which falls on Monday, Aug. 19. Astronomers say the lunar phenomenon will be at its peak in the Grecian sky at 9.25 that evening.
The country’s culture ministry will be organizing and scheduling special events as it has done for many years now to celebrate the full moon in August, which marks the height of Greece’s summer holiday season.
The ministry has published a list of more than 100 archaeological and historical sites, museums and monuments that will remain open on the evening in question, with more than 50 sites set to host events, such as concerts and performances. Entrance to the sites, museums and events will be free for everyone.
The August full moon is known as the “Sturgeon Moon”, after the freshwater fish that was readily caught at this time of year by Native Americans in the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain of North America, and which was a staple in their diet.
