Citizens enjoying the beautiful Greek weather spotted a shark in the Glyfada marina, in the Athenian Riviera, yesterday afternoon, Easter Monday.
Specifically, the shark was spotted in the harbor of the second of the four Glyfada marinas, swimming in shallow waters and appearing to have lost its orientation.
Those present at the scene didn’t miss the opportunity and captured videos of the shark, which went viral on social media.
Anastasia Miliou, director of research at the Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation, speaking on Mega TV about the incident, on Tuesday morning, noted “We live in a country with exceptional sea and rare biodiversity. There are 34 species of sharks in Greek waters. This particular species is found in shallow waters, pursuing something and ended up in the wrong place. It’s not unusual and it’s not dangerous. There is no reason to panic.”
Furthermore, she advises, that when we come across a rare, uncommon species, we should allow it to navigate its path. We remain calm, refrain from shouting or screaming.
“The incident in Glyfada serves as a reminder that the seas are not just for us but also for the other species with which we coexist,” Miliou says.
