Heavy storms swept across various regions of Greece on Saturday night, causing widespread disruptions and damage, particularly in Western Greece’s second largest city Agrinio and nearby areas. The severe weather brought torrential rain, flooding, and landslides, leading to power outages and road closures as emergency crews worked through the night to assist affected residents.
In Agrinio, which is part of the Aetolia-Acarnania regional unit, swollen streams overflowed, inundating roads and cutting off access in several areas. Vehicles were trapped in floodwaters, while a car was immobilized when a nearby stream breached its banks.
Firefighters on foot were deployed to rescue residents and clear debris from roads.
At 11:30 PM, a 112 emergency alert was sent to Agrinio residents, urging them to avoid non-essential travel and follow safety instructions from local authorities.
In response to the storm, the Civil Protection Mechanism of the Aetolia-Acarnania Regional Unit held an emergency meeting, placing rescue teams and municipal crews on heightened alert.
Other Affected Areas
The nearby region of Preveza faced its own challenges, with flooding reported in the area surrounding ancient city of Nikopolis. Fire crews rescued three elderly individuals from flooded ground-floor homes. The heavy rainfall also led to the closure of parts of the Ioannina–Preveza national road due to high water levels.
The storm’s impact extended to the Ionian island of Corfu, the northwestern city of Arta, and the central Greek municipality of Nafpaktia, though with less severe effects. Authorities in these regions remain on alert for potential worsening conditions.
