A trainee doctor faced a terrifying ordeal at the Athens “Agia Sofia” Children‘s Hospital in the early hours of Wednesday, Jan. 15 less than a week after the incident at the “Red Cross” Hospital, where an elevator plummeted, injuring four people, including a patient on a stretcher and their companion.

This latest incident at yet another healthcare facility has sparked controversy after being exposed by the General Secretary of OENGE, Panagiotis Papanikolaou. Using X (formerly Twitter), Papanikolaou accused the hospital administration of attempting to cover up the event.

According to the allegations, the elevator mishap at the Athens “Agia Sofia” Hospital involved an on-duty doctor, raising further concerns about safety standards in public hospitals.

The opposition party SYRIZA has sharply responded to the recent hospital elevator incident blaming the government and the Ministry of Health for neglecting the country’s healthcare system.

In a strongly-worded statement, SYRIZA accused New Democracy’s political leadership and ministry-appointed administrators of abandoning critical infrastructure maintenance, putting hospital workers, patients, and visitors in harm’s way.

“Following the Red Cross incident, another elevator accident has been recorded, this time at the ‘Agia Sofia’ Children’s Hospital. The National Health System has been abandoned by New Democracy, the political leadership of the Ministry of Health, and the politically appointed administrators,” the statement read.

SYRIZA further condemned the lack of accountability and urgency in modernizing hospital infrastructure, calling the situation “unacceptable and dangerous.”
