According to an official announcement from the Municipality of Athens, kindergartens and primary schools will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday, June 12 and 13, due to the extreme weather conditions expected from the heat wave.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) updated the emergency weather bulletin, predicting high temperatures and the arrival of African dust. The heatwave is expected to last until Friday, with temperatures reaching 40-42 degrees Celsius.

The Municipality of Athens stated that all primary education schools will suspend educational activities on June 12 and 13 due to the heat wave. The situation for Friday, June 14, will be reassessed on Thursday based on the latest risk bulletin.

In addition to the school closures, the Municipality of Athens has decided on reduced operating hours for nursery schools. Due to the high temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday, nursery schools, as well as the central service at 181 Rhodes Street, Sepolia, will operate from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

These flexible working hours are in accordance with the Ministry of the Interior’s circular on ‘Employee Health Protection Measures – Operation of Public Services in Light of the Impending Heat wave.’

Meanwhile, secondary schools will continue to conduct internal and national exams as usual. On Wednesday, June 12, candidates from General High Schools (GEL) will complete their orientation subject exams, followed by specialized subjects.
