The Greek General Secretariat for Civil Protection has declared a state of emergency for the Municipality of Thira on Santorini due to ongoing earthquake activity allowing for expedited decisions, including the reconstruction of essential infrastructure such as airports, ports, and roads.

The emergency status will remain in effect until March 3.

Santorini and nearby islands continue to experience frequent tremors, some occurring just minutes apart. Seismologists warn that the activity is likely to persist, with some experts predicting an even stronger earthquake in the coming weeks.

On Thursday, more than eight quakes measuring over 4.0 on the Richter scale were reported in a period of 20 minutes while a more powerful 5.2 R temblor struck late on Wednesday.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias are expected to visit Santorini on Friday to assess the situation.

Hundreds of residents have evacuated the island, while those remaining have organized makeshift patrols following reports of looting. Schools on Santorini, Amorgos, Ios, and Anafi remain closed, with additional closures implemented on other nearby islands as a precaution.
