A major end-of-season wildfire appeared as ebbing on Sunday morning on the eastern Aegean Island of Samos, and specifically at a wooden area at the Prasso promontory. Only smoke was visible from the specific site.
The blaze erupted after 6 p.m. the previous day in a remote and inaccessible region of the verdant isle near the monastery of the Zoodochos Pigis (Life-Bearing Spring). The isle lies just off the Asia Minor coast, with the flames seen from the opposite Turkish resort of Kusadasi.
More than 50 fire-fighters and volunteers operating eight vehicles and earth-moving equipment, and assisted by three aircraft, were fielded at the scene.
The annual wildfire season in the east Mediterranean country, at least on paper, is nearly at end, with 2024 witnessing at least two destructive conflagrations, one in northeast Attica prefecture and the other around the northern Peloponnese coastal town of Xylokastro.
