Ruling New Democracy (ND) deputy Thodoris Roussopoulos has been elected as the president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), the first time a Greek citizen will assume the post since its inception in 1949.

The CoE’s Parliamentary Assembly is the parliamentary arm of the organization, a 46-nation international body dedicated to upholding human rights, democracy and the rule of law.

PACE consists of 306 members selected from the national parliaments of the CoE’s member-states, convening four times a year for week-long plenary sessions in Strasbourg, France.

His term will extend for a year, with a renewal allowed once.

Roussopoulos was a journalist and television presenter before entering politics. He has served as a government spokesman and minister of state.
