Unsettled weather in Greece is expected to kick off the week, with rainfall expected across the country, though lighter and less intense in the southern regions. Thunderstorms are forecast for the southern Ionian, Peloponnese, mainland Greece, Evia, and northern Aegean. These will weaken by the evening. Snowfall will occur in all mainland mountainous areas, spreading from north to south, with snow expected at elevations of 400m in Thessaly and almost at sea level in Macedonia and Thrace. Heavy snow is anticipated in western Macedonia, Epirus, and western Thessaly.

Temperatures will drop significantly, ranging from 0–5°C in the north, 7°C in Thessaly, 13–15°C in the rest of the mainland, and up to 19°C in the Aegean. Winds will blow from the east in the Ionian at 6–8 Beaufort, and in the Aegean, southerlies will prevail in the south up to 6 Beaufort, while the northern Aegean will experience gale-force northeasterly winds at 8–9 Beaufort.

Overcast skies with rain will dominate in Athens throughout the day with occasional thunderstorms. Temperatures will range from 8–13°C, with northerly winds at 4–6 Beaufort, locally reaching 7 Beaufort.

Snow is expected in the greater Thessaloniki area, including all mountainous and semi-mountainous regions, and within the city. Temperatures will range from 0–3°C, with northerly winds in the Thermaic Gulf at 5 Beaufort, increasing to 8–9 Beaufort south of Chalkidiki.

Looking ahead

Tuesday will begin with heavier rainfall and snow in the mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of central and southern Greece, from Thessaly southwards. However, by midday, the weather will start to improve in the western and northern regions, with conditions stabilizing by evening. Despite the easing of precipitation, the cold will persist, with temperatures dropping further to 5–6°C in northern and central areas, 12°C in the rest of the mainland, and up to 19°C in Crete. Winds will predominantly be northerly and easterly, blowing at 8–9 Beaufort in most maritime areas, except for southerlies up to 5 Beaufort in the Dodecanese. Gradual weakening of winds is expected in the afternoon.

Scattered thunderstorms are forecast for the southern Ionian and the Aegean on Wednesday, while light local rain will affect the central and southern mainland in the morning, with some snow in the corresponding mountainous and semi-mountainous areas. The weather in Greece will see a slight rise in temperatures, but the morning will remain cold with frost in some areas. Winds will be northerly, reaching 6–7 Beaufort, with a gradual decrease in intensity as the day progresses.
