Protest Today in Athens, Thessaloniki Against Non-State Unis in Greece

Professors and students will gather today, February 22, at noontime in Athens and Thessaloniki

Groups of professors, students and their supporters will protest again today against the Greek government’s bill to allow the recognized operation of non-state, non-profit universities in Greece, with gatherings planned for noontime in downtown Athens at the Propylaia university administration building along Panepistimiou avenue and at Thessaloniki’s Kamara site.

The Greek Primary Teachers’ Federation (DOE) and the Federation of Secondary Education State School Teachers (OLME) called on educators to participate, as well, through a work stoppage at 11 a.m. Similar mobilizations, however, usually have little participation.

The federation of secondary level teachers expressed support for only state universities and the primary school teachers’ union reiterated its support against anything but state-run tertiary education, in announcing a work stoppage from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
