The head of the prosecutor’s office for the Athens first instance courts has ordered a preliminary investigation into social media posts advocating violence during scheduled protests next Friday, on the two-year anniversary of the deadly Tempi rail collision.

The investigation was assigned to the electronic crimes department by high-ranking prosecutor Aristidis Koreas.

According to reports, authorities will attempt to identify the users behind the specific posts in order for prosecutors to ascertain whether a crime has been committed, namely, incitement to commit offenses.

Fifty-seven people, mostly passengers on a north-bound train, were killed when the latter crashed into an oncoming south-bound freight train on the evening of Feb. 28, 2023.

Both major tertiary unions in the country, GSEE representing the private sector, and ADEDY, which represents civil servants, have called a 24-hour strike on Friday.

Meanwhile protest marches have been scheduled across the country to mark the two-year anniversary of the Tempi disaster.
