Renowned Greek publisher, journalist, and motorsport enthusiast Kostas Kavvathas passed away on Wednesday at the age of 86.
Kavvathas was best known as the founder and publisher of “4 Trochoi” (4 Wheels), one of Greece’s most popular automotive magazines. Launched in 1970, the publication set new standards for automotive journalism in the country and remains a reference point for enthusiasts to this day.
Beyond print, Kavvathas was a prominent figure on Greek television. He became the first to host an automotive-focused program, “Trochoi & Dromoi” (Wheels & Roads), which aired on Mega Channel and helped bring car culture and road safety issues into the public spotlight.
Born in Athens, Kavvathas studied mechanical engineering at the North London Polytechnic (today the University of North London). His work, focusing primarily on the automotive industry and trends, appeared in several leading Greek newspapers and magazines, including Mesimvrini, To Vima, Kathimerini, and Proto Thema.

Kavvathas was also a published author and translator. His passion for cars extended beyond his writings; he actively participated in various motorsport events such as the Acropolis Rally, hill climbs, circuits, and other races. Under the pseudonym “Pileas”, he drove cars like the Peugeot 204 and the NSU 1200 TT in competitions, becoming a well-known figure in Greece’s racing community.
In 1990, he transitioned briefly into politics, serving as a member of the Athens City Council under then Mayor Antonis Tritsis.
Throughout his life, Kavvathas remained committed to raising awareness about road safety, using both his platform and influence to advocate for better driving practices and infrastructure in Greece.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his condolences, stating: “Over the course his life, he emerged as one of the most successful publishers in the field of specialized press. From his vibrant and often contradictory personality, we remember his deep knowledge and tireless advocacy. Above all, we honor his significant contribution to raising awareness about road safety and electric mobility; issues he championed long before these entered public discourse. My sincere condolences to his family and the many friends.”
