Greece Proposes Stricter Penalties to Curb Abuse

A new bill introduced by the Ministry of Justice aims to curb domestic violence through stricter penalties, including:

  • Sentences exceeding two years without suspension or conversion.
  • Expedited trials without the need for formal judicial orders.
  • Creation of a reporting database.

For felonies and misdemeanors carrying sentences of at least one year, where restrictive measures are insufficient, house arrest with electronic monitoring or pre-trial detention may be imposed.

Alignment with EU Directive

Pre-trial investigations will now be prioritized, and trials will be scheduled promptly. Additionally, detention for domestic violence offenses will be extended from 3 to 5 days for cases where the perpetrator is caught ‘red-handed’.

“Sentences over two years will no longer be suspended or converted, and appeals will not delay enforcement. Pre-trial detention will also apply for offenses with sentences over one year,” explained criminal lawyer Yiannis Glykas.

Addressing Juvenile Offenses

Key reforms are also introduced for juvenile delinquency, including up to 3 years imprisonment for participation in attacks. Teachers, social workers, psychologists, and coaches will now be required to report suspicious behavior to authorities.

The new legal framework also aims to protect minors from online pedophilia. Attempts to contact or meet minors under 15 years old will be punishable by up to three years in prison.
