One Fatality Reported in Migrant-Smuggling Incident Off Samos

25 foreign nationals were rescued from a half-sunken migrant boat located off NW Samos island

The Hellenic Coast Guard, assisted by Frontex, located a half-sunken boat off the northwest coast of the eastern Aegean Island of Samos on Sunday, loaded with 25 foreign nationals attempting to land on Greek territory.

One fatality was reported. The rest of the group were transferred to a reception center at the Samos port of Vathy.

Weather conditions at the site were reported as good, with winds of up to 4 on the Beaufort scale.

Search efforts are continuing by Greek authorities and Frontex personnel for possible missing persons.

The Greek island has been a “target” of migrant-smuggling networks operating from the opposite Turkish mainland for years due to its proximity to the Asia Minor coast.
