The civil war in Angola lasted for nearly three decades, from 1975 to 2002, fueled by political and ethnic divisions following the country’s independence from Portugal. It was marked by intense fighting between the ruling Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) government and the rebel National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) forces, resulting in widespread devastation and loss of life.

In 1975, Microsoft is established
Childhood friends Bill Gates and Paul Allen established Micro-Soft (for microprocessors and software) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. By the end of 1978, Microsoft’s sales topped more than $1 million. Microsoft relocated to Washington State in 1979. In 1985, Microsoft released a new operating system, Windows. It entered the stock market a year later. In 1987, 31-year-old Gates became the world’s youngest billionaire.

In 1969, the first artificial heart is implanted
Dr. Denton A. Cooley attached patient Haskell Karp, who suffered from severe heart failure, to an artificial pump. The machine kept him alive for 65 hours, until he received a human heart transplant. His body rejected the transplant and he died on April 8, 1969.

In 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. is assassinated
Martin Luther King Jr. a leader of the American civil rights movement, was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee, by James Earl Ray. The assassination occurred as King was preparing to lead a protest march in Memphis in support of striking sanitation workers. He was standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel when he was fatally shot.

In 1949, NATO is formed
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a military alliance founded by Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Its purpose was tp foster collective security against the Soviet Union.
