Family and friends, both from within and beyond the football world, will bid farewell today to legendary veteran goalkeeper Nikos Sarganis, who passed away on Sunday, December 8.

The funeral will take place at the Papagou Municipal Cemetery in the Athens suburb of Papagou at 11 a.m.

Affectionately known to fans as the “Phantom,” the Greek football star had been in a private clinic battling cancer. News broke over the weekend that he had fallen into a coma, and tragically, he succumbed to the illness on Sunday.

Since the announcement of his passing, the sports community and the wider public have expressed profound grief.

Nikos Sarganis rose to prominence in the 1980s, playing for Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, and other teams. Renowned for his exceptional goalkeeping skills, he also excelled in penalty kicks, scoring several goals and solidifying his reputation as the “Phantom.”

With the Greek national team, Sarganis represented his country in 58 matches until 1991. After retiring from professional play, he transitioned into a successful coaching career, holding an A-Level Football Coaching License and serving as a certified goalkeeper trainer with UEFA’s educational team.
