Amid the ongoing seismic activity that has been shaking the island of Santorini the past two weeks a new life came into the world on Tuesday, February 11, on the island, bringing joy and hope not only to the family but also to the few remaining residents who have chosen to stay on the island, despite the continuous earthquakes.

As reported, a perfectly healthy baby boy was born, on Tuesday afternoon, delivered at Santorini Hospital.

The heartwarming news of the new birth, which momentarily lifted the spirits of those on the quake-stricken island, was shared on social media by Deputy Minister of Health, Marios Themistocleous. The minister, who visited the mother at Santorini Hospital, conveyed the joyful update to the public.

“Amidst the earthquakes in Santorini, a new life has come into the world! Congratulations to the strong mother, and a big thank you to the medical staff for their dedication. May your baby boy always be healthy and happy!” wrote the Deputy Minister.

Meanwhile, seismic activity in the Cyclades continues at an intense pace. Scientists describe the phenomenon as unprecedented in global history and are concerned about its evolution.

The latest major earthquake, measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale, occurred on the evening of Monday February 10 and is the strongest tremor to date.

The authorities are on high alert, and the island’s healthcare system has been reinforced. The island’s hospital has been strengthened with additional doctors and paramedics.

According to the deputy minister, the hospital is staffed with a general surgeon, internist, anesthesiologist, and orthopedic specialist.

It should also be noted that teams from the National Emergency Aid Center have been deployed, and six teams from the Special Disaster Medicine Unit of EKAB are also on standby for immediate assistance in case of an extreme scenario.
