New Arrest in Relation to Athens Apartment Explosion

Other media reports cite fingerprint results pointing to a 36-year-old Piraeus man as the victim of the blast

A 31-year-old local man was arrested by police’s anti-terrorism squad on Saturday in connection with an explosion inside a central Athens apartment on Thursday, which claimed the life of a man and seriously injured another woman.

The man, along with his companion, allegedly provided the couple inside the apartment with the keys to the dwelling. He voluntarily turned himself in on Friday as a witness, only to be charged and arrested as a suspect.

He has denied any involvement in the incident and is expected to be led before a relevant prosecutor over the weekend.

Authorities believe a make-shift explosive device inadvertently detonated inside the third-floor apartment in a nondescript building in the Ampelokipi district. As such, investigations are focusing on the existence of a possible urban terror cell, of the so-called anti-state/anti-establishment variety.

Meanwhile, in later press reports on Saturday in Athens, authorities believe they have identified the victim of the blast. The reports cite fingerprint results provided through Europol that point to a 36-year-old Piraeus man who had previously been arrested in Germany during street protests and “activist-related” incidents.
