An emotional funeral service was held on Wednesday in the city of Milton Keynes, northwest of London, for late footballer George Baldock, whose body was discovered in his apartment’s pool in southern Athens earlier this month.
An initial cause of death was given as drowning.
Baldock, 31, who played for nine seasons as a standout right back for Premier side Sheffield United, was on the roster of Panathinaikos Athens for the 2024-25 season. He also picked up 12 caps for the Greek national team, qualifying through his grandmother’s Greek descent, which allowed him to acquire dual citizenship.
His lifeless body was found in the pool at his Glyfada district residence on Oct. 9, a day before he was scheduled to return to England to celebrate his son’s first birthday, according to British media reports.
Practically all of Baldock’s Panathinaikos teammates, along with the pro football club’s management and coaches attended the service, flying to Britain aboard a chartered plane.
