On September 17, 2024, a significant fire broke out at the Motor Oil refinery in Agioi Theodoroi, sparking an all-night battle by firefighters to bring the flames under control.
The fire, which is now subsiding, began during maintenance work at an older section of the refinery, possibly caused by an operational malfunction during a shutdown procedure. The final report from the fire department, detailing the cause of the incident, is expected in the coming days.
Emergency services worked tirelessly to contain the blaze, with 30 firefighters and 12 vehicles, supported by the Motor Oil’s own fire response team, stationed on-site throughout the night. Thankfully, only three workers sustained minor injuries in the southern section of the refinery and were immediately transferred to the Corinth hospital for treatment.
Due to the fire, an emergency alert was issued via the 112 system, advising nearby residents to evacuate the area as a precaution. Local traffic was severely impacted, with the old Athens-Corinth National Road closed in both directions, from the Agioi Theodoroi junction to the Kalamaki toll station. Train services in the region also faced disruptions.
Motor Oil issued a statement confirming the fire, emphasizing that it was in close cooperation with authorities from the beginning of the incident. The company extended its gratitude to the firefighters and all personnel involved for their swift response.
