Moderate Quake Rattles Southern Crete

The earthquake was felt throughout the entire island, especially in the Hania and Rethymno regions

A 5.2 – according to other reports 5.1 – on the Richter scale earthquake was recorded at 19:29 local time on Wednesday south of the large island of Crete, with the epicenter pinpointed at 12 kilometers east-southeast of the town of Kastri and six kilometers east of the small island of Gavdos, in the Libyan Sea.

The earthquake was felt throughout the entire island, especially in the Hania and Rethymno regions. The tremor also shook the island’s biggest city, Irakleio (Heraklio) on the northern coast.

The quake’s depth was measured at roughly 40 kilometers.

No damages were reported.

The sea regions and land mass of Crete have yielded several moderate earthquakes over recent years.
