Missing German Tourist Found Dead on Crete

The search for 21-year-old German tourist Johan Williams has ended in tragedy, as his body was discovered one month after his disappearance near Samaria Gorge, Chania, on February 13.

Samaria Gorge, one of Greece’s most famous natural landmarks, is located on the island of Crete and is a popular destination for avid hikers. However, due to its length, isolation, and risk of flash floods, the trail can also be treacherous and fatal.

Williams’ remains were found in Gigilos, near “Mitato of Tzatzimos”, a highly dangerous area even for experienced climbers.

The search lasted a month, beginning when his disappearance was first noticed at the Xyloskalo parking area, near the gorge, on February 13. Security camera footage showed him parking his car at Xyloskalo before heading into the area on foot. His disappearance was reported to the police by the car rental company’s owner, who had been unable to reach him for several days.

Authorities and Williams’ family made tireless efforts to locate him, battling harsh weather conditions and navigating the rugged slopes of Gigilos.

According to local reports, mountaineers camping overnight in the mountains around the gorge discovered his body and immediately alerted the authorities.

With the exact location now confirmed, the Fire Department is preparing a recovery operation to retrieve his remains.
