Authorities in Larisa are intensifying and switching gears in their search for 39-year-old Vasilis Kalogiros, who was declared missing on December 30, 20924 after going for a walk near the Pineios River in the region, says To Vima.
Kalogiros’ disappearance has sparked a wave of speculation and attention from the press as he is a son of the lead prosecutor in the high-profile Tempi railway disaster case.
In an effort to expand their search operation and consider additional possibilities, Greek Police (ELAS) have requested surveillance footage from the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE) to aid their investigation.
Missing Since December 30, the Search for Kalogiros Intensifies
Kalogiros, who was visiting his parents in Larisa for the holidays, ‘disappeared’ after leaving for a walk without taking his phone. Extensive search efforts using drones, trained dogs, and rescue teams from the police, fire department, and the special rescue unit have so far yielded no results.
Authorities have previously highlighted how the search area around the Pineios River presents significant challenges, on account of fallen trees and muddy terrain.
The 39-year-old was last seen heading toward the river, a place he often visited for walks. When he didn’t return, he was declared missing.
His decision to leave his phone behind has raised questions among investigators, but family members say that it was not unsual for Kalogiros.
Police Investigating All Scenarios
“We are considering all possibilities,” said Giorgos Kalliakmanis, honorary president of the police union of Southeast Attica, in an interview with MEGA. He noted the unusual circumstances surrounding the case, including the absence of Kalogiros’ phone.
Some speculate he may have wanted to be alone, while others fear he may have met with an accident. Police immediately shut off water flow in the river upon being informed of his disappearance.
Private investigator Giorgos Tsoukalas, who is working on the case, described it as “the most mysterious disappearance” he has encountered in his career. He noted that leaving his phone behind was not unusual behavior for Kalogiros, but emphasized the difficulty of the search due to the challenging river conditions.
Tsoukalas also pointed out that Kalogiros left home in good spirits and had a strong relationship with his family, making the possibility of a voluntary disappearance unlikely.
Request for Video Footage from OSE
Adding a new dimension to the investigation, police have requested video footage from OSE following witness reports suggesting the missing Kalogiros may have been seen in another area. On January 3, police formally requested surveillance footage from Larisa station, focusing on platforms and ticket counters between 5 PM and 8 PM.
According to MEGA, two videos in the possession of the police show Kalogiros crossing a bridge over the river within the city before disappearing.
Family and Expert Perspectives
Psychologist Vera Athanasiou, commenting on the case, extended her support to the family, noting the lack of solid evidence to clarify the situation.
The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities working to piece together the final movements of Kalogiros in the hope of bringing clarity to his disappearance.
