Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport Secures Funds for Revamp of Metro Line 1 Train

The project amounts to 12.3 million euros, funded by the Cohesion Fund's Operational Program for Transport Infrastructure, Environment, and Sustainable Development.

The funding for the renovation of 14 trains on Metro Line 1, which runs from Piraeus, the largest of Greece’s ports to Kifisia in the northern suburbs of Athens, has been approved by the European Commission following actions by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

The project amounts to 12.3 million euros, funded by the Cohesion Fund’s Operational Program for Transport Infrastructure, Environment, and Sustainable Development.

Modernization is expected to extend train lifespan by 25 years, enhancing passenger comfort and reliability for cost and time savings. The project will deliver significant environmental benefits, energy savings, and improved public transportation reliability.

Athens can look forward to less atmospheric pollution and lower noise levels thanks to the modernized trains and the upgrade of two energy recovery substations, as well as the installation of an energy recovery system from regenerative braking, technologies that will reduce energy consumption by 15%.

The funding priorities of the Cohesion Fund’s Operational Program for Transport Infrastructure, Environment, and Sustainable Development relating to transport include:

• Promoting the completion of part of the infrastructures of the core TEN-T (road and rail) and developing/improving the comprehensive TEN-T (with emphasis on road and rail, but also with focused interventions on ports and airports).

• Promoting combined transportation and the modernization of the transport system.

• Improving the safety of transportation.

• Developing and expanding sustainable and ecological urban transportation.
