Some 50 irregular migrants were smuggled onto one of Lesvos’ most popular beaches on Monday, Skala Eresos, bypassing more secluded spots and a destination not facing the opposite Turkish coast.
The location means that migrant traffickers circled around the large eastern Aegean island to reach the destination.
No information was given on the nationalities, gender and ages of the migrants.
Conversely, initial statements by some of the detained individuals point to a Russian national. A search is ongoing, while the third country nationals were transferred to a reception and ID center.
The incident is one of several reported over the recent period, with coast guard authorities on heightened alert against migrant trafficking from Turkey to various Greek isles.
