A man lost his life due to extreme weather conditions in Toroni, a beach village in Halkidiki, northern Greece. According to initial reports by public broadcaster ERT, the tragic incident occurred last night when the victim attempted to avoid hitting fallen rocks on the road while driving. His vehicle veered off course and plunged into a 30-meter ravine.

A passerby discovered the man this morning and notified authorities. Reports suggest the victim had died of hypothermia, as he is believed to have remained trapped in his car for over eight hours.

The severe weather system, named Bora, has caused significant destruction in Halkidiki, particularly in the Sithonia region, known as the second leg of the peninsula. Residents are grappling with the aftermath, and with daylight, the full extent of the damage has become apparent.

In Toroni, a bridge collapsed under the force of rushing waters, highlighting the storm’s devastating impact.

Meanwhile, the Greek island of Rhodes was battered by storm Bora over the weekend, which unleashed three months’ worth of rainfall on the ‘Island of the Sun’ in a mere twelve hours.

An estimated 324 tons of rain fell in a torrential downpour, causing side streets to turn into fast-flowing rivers, flooding homes and businesses, and even causing a bridge to collapse.

On Sunday, the political leadership of the island met and said that a state of emergency would be declared, and noting that the region of Ialysos, which lies between the international airport of Rhodes and the city of Rhodes, was hardest hit. Authorities have also said they will ask for financial support for those impacted by the floods.
