A large trove of ancient artifacts and objects, 172 in total, were recovered by Greek authorities on Monday in police raids of three residences in the coastal Athens district of Alimos, with two arrests made in the case.
The recovered items include clay lamps dating to the Roman and Byzantine periods, ancient bronze and silver coins, pottery fragments, cylinders, vials, clay figurines, and even miniature figures depicting dogs, with some dating to the Archaic period.
Both suspects were led before a relevant prosecutor on charges of violating laws regarding the protection of antiquities and cultural legacy.
Eight of the recovered objects are still under scrutiny by specialist archaeologists and art experts to determine their origin.
