Police on Monday announced the arrest in Athens of a 50-year-old man on charges of inciting violence at Friday’s protest rally, held on the two-year anniversary of the Tempi rail disaster.
The suspect allegedly posted inflammatory material on social media, specifically on the X platform, according to the news site of state broadcaster ERT.
The head of the Athens first instance prosecutor’s office a day earlier, on Sunday, ordered a preliminary investigation into social media posts aimed at inciting violence at various such protects around the country on Friday.

Unions in the country have declared a 24-hour strike on Friday, which is expected to drastically affect coastal shipping and flights to and from the country, given industrial actions by ferryboat crewmembers and air traffic controllers. Rail schedules have also been cancelled, although the Athens metro system will operate as normal.
Various college students’ associations and even pupils’ groups have announced that they will participate, as well.
