Municipal services across Greece are closed today, Friday, March 21, as local government employees stage a 24-hour nationwide strike.
The strike, organized by the Panhellenic Federation of Local Government Employees (POE-OTA), impacts all municipal workers, with their primary demand being the permanent employment of staff currently working under European Social Fund (ESPA)-funded social programs.
A protest gathering is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. outside the Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family on Dragatsaniou Street, followed by a march to the Ministry of the Interior on Vasilissis Sofias Avenue. The Civil Servants’ Confederation (ADEDY) has voiced its support for the strike, calling on union representatives to join the demonstration.
Teachers Join Strike with Work Stoppage
In a show of solidarity, the Federation of Secondary Education Teachers (OLME) has announced a three-hour work stoppage beginning at 11:00 a.m. The teachers’ union is demanding the withdrawal of all disciplinary actions imposed on educators related to the controversial evaluation process.
Social Workers Mobilize for 24-Hour Strike
Social workers across Greece are also participating in a 24-hour strike today, following a call from the Association of Social Workers of Greece. The strike applies to social workers in all public sector services and institutions and is endorsed by ADEDY.
The action coincides with World Social Work Day, aiming to underscore the essential role of social workers in promoting social solidarity. Participants have been urged to take part in local demonstrations to advocate for their cause.
