An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale, according to initial estimates, shook the greater Athens-Pireaus area at 17.55 (15.55 GMT) on Thursday afternoon. Later estimates by the Geodynamic Institute in Athens gauged the quake at 4.4 on the Richter scale.

The quake was pinpointed at some 45 to 48 kilometers northeast of downtown Athens, and two to three kilometers south-southwest of the large Evia Island coastal town of Aliveri, meaning it occurred in the northern end of the Southern Evoikos Gulf that separates Evia (Euboea) and the mainland, north of Athens proper.

A depth of nine kilometers was initially given by the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre; 12.9 kilometers, as calculated by the Athens institute.

The tremor was felt in much of the greater Athens area.

No damages have been reported.
