Another mishap was reported at the newly inaugurated Thessaloniki metro on Monday, the second time this month and slightly more than three weeks after the one-line underground commenced operation, as a train on track 1 came to a full stop.

Passengers aboard the carriages were transported along track 2 after a wait of roughly 15 minutes, although the rail interruption caused numerous commuters to congregate at stations.

In a later announcement on the thessmetro.gr website, the metro’s operator said that “even a slight deviation, such as an obstacle on the tracks, will cause the system to automatically stop the train in order to evaluate the situation.”

The managing company added that “…multiple backup security systems work in parallel. If a primary system detects a problem, backup safety systems are activated. The train remains immobilized until all systems confirm the conditions for the safe continuation of operation.”
