Last Defendants Held in Deadly Hooligan Rampage Last Aug. Released Pending Trial

The development frees 102 Croatian nationals, all young males and reputed “ultras” of the Dinamo Zagreb football club.

The last of 105 suspects initially detained after last August’s hooligan rampage outside the AEK Athens stadium in the northwest Nea Philadelphia district, which resulted in the fatal injury of a 29-year-old local man, were released from custody on Friday.

Greek judicial authorities – examining magistrates and prosecutors – approved the last tranche of release petitions submitted by suspects held on remand in connection with the case.

The development frees 102 Croatian nationals, all young males and reputed “ultras” of the Dinamo Zagreb football club. Also released were two Greek citizens and an Albanian man.

All of the suspects were released with conditions. The first batch of 50 defendants were released 10 days ago.

Suspects are charged with a variety of offenses, although Greek authorities have still not identified as suspect or suspects who stabbed Michalis Katsouris to death on the evening of Aug. 7.
